According to an embodiment of the present invention, provided are a medical imaging apparatus and method for estimating tensor through motion compensation. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the medical imaging apparatus for estimating tensor through motion compensation comprises: a coil unit configured to form a diffusion-weighted gradient magnetic field corresponding to each of a plurality of directions in a target part of an object; an image processing unit corresponding to each direction by the diffusion-weighted gradient magnetic field formed through the coil unit, and obtaining a plurality of slice images of the target part; and a processor configured to generate a diffusion-weighted image corresponding to each direction by sequentially combining the obtained slice images. The processor generates a simulated diffusion-weighted image by matching a reference image, which is not diffusion weighted, with the diffusion-weighted image corresponding to each direction, matches a plurality of slice images constituting the simulated diffusion-weighted image with a plurality of slice images of the diffusion-weighted image corresponding to each direction, corrects a direction vector for each slice image of the diffusion-weighted image corresponding to the direction when each slice is measured by matching with the simulated diffusion-weighted image, estimates a diffusion tensor for each slice image by using the corrected direction vector for each slice image of the diffusion-weighted image corresponding to each direction, and generates a diffusion tensor image by using the corrected direction vector and an estimated diffusion tensor for each slice image of the diffusion-weighted image corresponding to each direction.
