The present invention relates to genetic constructs that can be used in the preparation of transgenic plants. This construct may have the ability to reduce nitrate concentration in plants, particularly in plant leaves, to induce a senescence-like phenotype. The invention also extends to plant cells transformed with such constructs and the transgenic plants themselves. The invention also relates to a method for producing a transgenic plant and a method for reducing the nitrate content in a plant.
