A system for adjusting the configuration of a patient support surface on a patient support apparatus, wherein the patient support apparatus comprises one or more actuators to adjust the patient support surface configuration. The system comprises a controller configured to operate the one or more actuators, the controller including a memory storing an ordered sequence of at least three patient support surface configurations, wherein each of the stored patient support surface configurations comprises stored positions of the one or more actuators. The system further comprises a user interface unit connected to the controller. The controller is configured to operate the one or more actuators to progress the patient support surface through the ordered sequence of at least three stored patient support surface configurations in a first order in response to a first input signal from the user interface unit. The controller is further configured to operate the one or more actuators to progress the patient support surface through the ordered sequence of at least three stored patient support surface configurations in a second order, opposite to the first order, in response to a second input signal from the user interface unit. The first input signal is generated by a first user input and the second input signal is generated by a second user input.
