The invention relates to the field of medicine, in particular to dental therapy and preventive treatment of dental diseases, and is intended for diagnosing the intensity of various forms of caries in patients of different age groups, and for planning future treatment. A universal caries intensity index (UCII) is determined by making a calculation on the basis of the formula UCII = ΣDFM/χ (2), where D is the number of baby teeth and second teeth with caries, including with initial forms (caries at the stain stage)； F is the number of filled baby teeth and second teeth； M is the number of baby teeth and second teeth that have been extracted as a consequence of extensive caries； x is the number of teeth which a patient of a given age should have minus teeth missing as a result of primary partial adentia, and/or physiological changes, which number is determined on the basis of the formula х = Σt.a. g. - Σt.p.a. - Σt.ph.ch. (3) where: t.a.g. is the number of teeth in a given age group； t.p.a. is the number of teeth with primary adentia； t.ph.ch. is the number of teeth at a stage of physiological change. Furthermore, the caries intensity level UCII is assessed according to the following criteria for all age groups: ≤0.14 - low； ≤ 0.15-0.30 - medium； ≤ 0.31-0.60 - high； ≥ 0.61 - very high.
