A medical robot for use inside a magnetic resonance imager includes ahorizontal motion assembly, a vertical motion assembly and a controller. Thehorizontal motion assembly includes a motion joint, an ultrasonic motoroperablyconnected to the motion joint and an encoder operably connected to theultrasonicmotor. The vertical motion assembly is operably connected to the horizontalmotionassembly and includes a motion joint, an ultrasonic motor operably connectedto themotion joint and an encoder operably connected to the ultrasonic motor. Themotorsand encoders are positioned proximate to each joint of the vertical andhorizontalmotionassemblies. The controller is operably connected thereto and adapted tobepowered off when the magnetic resonance imager is being used to collectimages.The ultrasonic motors each have a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotationof themotors, and each motor is positioned in a saggital or axial plane.
