A retracting animal lead (1) comprises a housing (2) having a handle portion (4) and an internal chamber (20) in which a spool 30 is rotatably mounted. An extraction opening (5) is formed in the housing (2) in alignment with a winding cylinder of the spool (30) for guiding lead material from the spool out of the housing. The spool (30) is rotationally biased into a first rotational position and is being rotatable against the biasing force so as, in use, to unwind from the spool (30) the lead material wound thereon.
