Compositions and methods, including nov-elhomogeneous microparticulate suspensions, are de-scribedfor treating acute wounds, chronic wounds and/ora wound or epithelial tissue surface that contains bacterialbiofilm, including unexpected synergy between bismuth--thiol (BT)compounds and certain antibiotics, to providetopical formulations including antiseptic formulations, formanagement and promotion of wound healing and in par-ticularinfected wounds. Previously unpredicted antibacte-rialproperties and anti-biofilm properties of disclosed BTcompounds and BT compound-plus-antibiotic combina-tionsare also described, including preferential efficaciesof certain such compositions for treating gram-positivebacterial infections, and distinct preferential efficacies ofcertain such compositions for treating gram-negative bac-terialinfections.
