Independent claims are included for: (1) determining the potential of pharmaceutical substances for reducing the cellular glutathione content and/or for increasing the cellular reactive oxygen species content comprising either incubating the cells with different concentrations of substances and determining the glutathione content of the cells in comparison to the control cells; or incubating the cells with different concentrations of substances and staining the cells with at least a fluorescent- or chemiluminescent-dye, preferably with 2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate; and (2) determining the genetic susceptibility for developing a autoimmune disease comprising extracting the peripheral blood leucocytes, isolating the genomic DNA from the peripheral blood leucocytes and detecting the genotype of the glutathione-S-transferase by real-time polymerase chain reaction and/or gene-chips.
