In a visual prosthesis electrodes stimulate retinal tissue to induce the perceptionof light to a user implanted with the prosthesis. The prosthesis must have a return,or common, electrode to make a complete circuit with the retinal tissue. To avoidstimulating tissue with the return electrode, it is advantageous if the electrodeis large. The invention involver a flexible circuit electrode array comprisinga polymer base layer, metal traces deposited on said polymer base layer, includingelectrodes suitable to stimulate neural tissue a polymer top layer depositedon said polymer base layer and said metal traces, and a return electrode separatefrom said stimulating electrodes. The flexible circuit electrode array comprisesa secondary coil for receiving visual data； an electronics package electricallycoupled to said receiving coil, and a plurality of stimulating electrode electricallycoupled to said electronics package.
