The invention includes a method for expanding a population of T cells that have undergone electroporation. The method includes the step of electroporating a population of cells, including T cells, using mRNA encoding a chimeric membrane protein comprising an antigen binding domain for a molecule and an intracellular domain of a costimulatory molecule. The cultured T cells expand at least 10 times.
