The replaceable supply pack comprises a metering pump (22) and a container (24) having a liquid substance (25) to be supplied by the beverage preparation device. The method includes sequentially detecting (S 0) the arrangement of the replaceable supply pack and executing the activation procedure (AP). The activation procedure (AP) includes repeating the activation cycle (AC) (S4) while detecting whether or not a liquid substance is present inside the metering pump. The activation cycle (AC) comprises activating the metering pump during a first period (S5), and at least partially deactivating the metering pump during a second period of time ( S5). The activation procedure (AP) is completed when liquid substance is detected to be present in the metering pump.
