The present invention relates to the use of carbohydrates in the preparationof a composition for treating and/or preventing diseases and/or disorderscaused by imbalanced fermentation in the colon comprising providingcomposition capable of maintaining a sustained and controlled fermentationthroughout the colon of a subject by formulating slowly fermented complexoligomeric or polymeric carbohydrate(s) into a nutritionally, nutraceuticallyand/or pharmacologically acceptable composition. The present invention alsorelates to a composition comprising a slowly fermented complex oligomer orpolymer carbohydrate as an active component for sustaining and controlling thefermentation throughout the colon of a subject.
