A novel intrauterine contraceptive device of the present invention is developed to surmount the problem prevailing with the conventional contraceptive device. The IUD of the present invention is covered with a thin layer of a biodegradable/bioabsorbable polymer, to control the excessive release of copper ion in the early stage and to minimize bleeding and pain after insertion. The polymer thin layer has a controlled degradation rate and advantageously degrades over a period of time say between one month and five month in the uterus environment.
