The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating gastric carcinoma comprising 2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-3,5,7-trihydroxy-4H-chromen-4-one (quercetin) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof as an effective component. In the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive gastric carcinoma cell line, the quercetin of the present invention induces soluble proliferation of EBV, thereby killing infected cells effectively inhibits lateral transmission of EBV progeny viruses dissolved out of the cells to normal cells indicates superior anticancer effect than the conventional isoliquiritigenin known for having antiviral activity and anti-EBV-positive gastric carcinoma activity and significantly inhibits growth of EBV-induced tumors in vivo.
