A filter particularly suitable for filtering grape and similar juices and liquids includes a filter chamber 12 with a fluid inlet 15 into which the liquid to be filtered is pumped to pressurize the chamber and a fine screen filter element 23 around the cylindrical wall of the chamber. The filtered liquid passes through the screen and is collected at 19 and the residue is wiped from the inside of the filter screen and toward the residue outlet 45 that is at the other end of the filter chamber from the inlet. The helical wiper 25 is provided with blades to wipe the residue toward the residue outlet and impeller blades to direct the fluid in the chamber back toward the inlet in a counter-flow from the flow from the pump at the inlet to provide for efficient filtering of the juice without having to stop and clear the filter screen.
