589236 A device (10) is disclosed for accessing the vasculature of a patient. The device comprises a catheter tube (12) and a generally conical diffuser tip (18) attached to an end of the catheter tube. The catheter tube (12) and diffuser tip (18) are in fluid communication so that an infusant may pass through the catheter tube (12) and into the diffuser tip (18) before exiting the device. A method is disclosed of using such a device (10) to reduce the recoil force of a vascular catheter during infusion.
