The invention relates to a device for cutting a blanket of organic material lying on the ground and to the use thereof. In order to create a device which makes possible planting or sowing even if a closed mulch blanket is present, in the context of the invention at least one driven blade (21) and a protective device (20) are mounted on a frame (1). The blade (21) cuts the closed mulch blanket and keeps the slit open as far as the coulter of the following conventional planting or sowing machine.
