Disclosed is an endoscope whereby excellent observation can be performed while suppressing halation, without lowering light distribution performance. The endoscope comprises: an image pickup optical system (3) for observing an observation subject, arranged at the tip of an insertion section (1) of the endoscope, and a plurality of illumination optical systems (2) whereby illuminating light emitted from a light source, arranged at the tip of the aforementioned insertion section (1), is distributed onto the aforementioned observation subject. The aforementioned illumination optical systems (2) and the image pickup optical system (3) are arranged in the plane at the tip of the insertion section (1) so as to satisfy the following conditional expression (1). 1≦ φ2/g(ω,R)2 ≦ 30 ・・・ (1). In this expression, φ is the external diameter in the plane at the tip of the insertion section (1) g(ω,R) is the observation distance in the optic axis direction determined from the image angle (ω) of the image pickup optical system (3) obtained by dividing the effective diameter of the lens face of the image pickup optical system (3) by the distance (R) from the centre of the image pickup optical system (3), through the centre of this illuminating optical system (2), as far as the outer periphery of the tip plane, at the aforementioned tip plane.Linvention concerne un endoscope par lequel une excellente observation peut être effectuée tout en supprimant le halo, sans abaisser la performance de distribution de la lumière.
