The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a carboxylic acid salt with herbicidal activity, the process comprising the steps of: i) combining a carboxylic acid and a high-boiling organic solvent, immiscible with water, to obtain a solution or a suspension； ii) treating the solution or slurry produced in step (i) with a base to form a carboxylic acid salt； iii) removing the solvent from the mixture produced in step (ii) to obtain a cake of the carboxylic acid salt； and iv) drying the cake obtained in step (iii), the process being particularly suitable for the preparation of a dicamba salt, a process for preparing dicamba-sodium comprising the steps of: (1) dissolving a carboxylic acid consisting essentially of dicamba in an inert high boiling organic solvent and immiscible with water, to obtain a solution or a suspension； (2) treating the dicamba solution or suspension of Step 1 with a base selected from sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate and mixtures thereof in a molar ratio of 1: 0 97 +/- 0.6% to form dicamba-sodium； (3) centrifuging the reaction mixture of Step 2 to obtain a cake of the dicamba-sodium salt； and (4) drying the dicamba-sodium cake obtained in Step 3 to obtain a dry dicamba-sodium having a permanent pH of between about 7 and 10 after dissolution in water.
