A dental cleaning appliance, such as an electric toothbrush with an extendable rinse nozzle 36 for delivering bursts of working fluid such as water to the teeth of a user, has a fluid delivery system 100 which includes a handle housing a fluid inlet 104, a pump 106, a hydraulic accumulator 108 and a control circuit 58, the handle detachable from a cleaning tool comprising the nozzle 36 and a fluid reservoir 34 which extends around its stem. In use, the pump 106 supplies working fluid to the hydraulic accumulator 108 from the fluid reservoir 34 via the inlet 104, and the control circuit 58 closes a solenoid valve 114 whilst the accumulator 108 is replenished by the pump 106 and opens the solenoid valve 114 for the accumulator 108 to deliver bursts of working fluid to the nozzle outlet 102. The pump may be a diaphragm pump and the accumulator may be a spring-type or gas-charged accumulator.
