A composition is provided that may be delivered orally or to the skin ormucous membranes and that provides substantially the same physiological effectas menthol but does not contain menthol at all or in an amount that is lessthan normally is required to deliver the same physiological effect. Thedescription extends to products suitable for oral, skin or mucosal deliverythat impart a menthol-like sensation and that contain the compositionsdescribed herein. Particular of these products include chewing gums andconfections. Further, the description embraces methods of providing aphysiological sensation substantially similar to that imparted by mentholalone by administering a composition as described herein or a productcontaining such a composition. Still further, the description extends tomethods for providing a physiological sensation substantially similar to oneaspect of the physiological sensation imparted by menthol alone or heightenedor reduced when compared to menthol alone.
