A method for making an intravenous or intramuscular artesunic acid formulation, the formulation being sterile injectable and the formulation is the subject of this invention. First the powdered artesunic acid is sterilized with ethylene oxide and placed in a sterile container. The sterile powder contained is then dissolved in a buffered solution with sterile sodium phosphate to produce an intravenous or intramuscular injection formulation. Sodium phosphate dissolves and dilutes the powdered artesunic acid without forming agglomerates or foaming resulting in an improved drug product.
