A single use measurement device 1 for measuring a resected femoral head 4 is provided. The device has a base 2 and a post 3 extending from the base. A generally flat, inclined femoral head support surface 7 is provided by the base. A movable height indicating arm 17 extends transversely to the post and is movable along the length of the post. The post has a rack (16, see figure 5) extending along its length and the height indicating arm has a co-operating resiliently biased pawl 21. Movement of the height indicating arm is only permitted in a direction towards the femoral head support surface. The post may have a scale or graduations 18. The inclined surface 7 may be at an angle of about 45 degrees to the post axis.
