In relation to the automatic detection of surgical instruments in respect oftheir type and their location, the inventionprovides a detection system having at least two surgical instruments, whicheach have at least one cavity extending along a longitudinalaxis of the instrument and a proximal entry region to the cavity, wherein anangle of the proximal entry region in relation to thelongitudinal extent of the cavity is different in the at least twoinstruments, having a sensor unit with two electromagnetic sensors thatis insertable into the cavity, one sensor thereof being arranged extendingaxially in the cavity, the other sensor thereof being arrangedin the entry region, having a field generator for producing an electromagneticfield, and having an evaluation unit for evaluating signalstransmitted to the evaluation unit from the sensors according to theirposition in the field of the field generator.For the automatic detection of surgical instrumentswith respect to the type and the location thereof, theinvention provides a detection system, which comprisesat least two surgical instruments, which each compriseat least one cavity extending along a longitudinal axisof the instrument and a proximal entry region to thecavity, wherein an angle of the proximal entry regionin relation to the longitudinal extension of the cavityis different in the at least two instruments, whichcomprises a sensor unit, which comprises twoelectromagnetic sensors and is insertable into thecavity, and one sensor of which extends axially in thecavity, and the other sensor of which is arranged inthe entry region, which comprises a field generator forgenerating an electromagnetic field, and whichcomprises an analysis unit for analyzing signalstransmitted by the sensors to the analysis unit inaccordance with the location thereof in the field ofthe field generator.
