The present invention relates to a system and method configured to process motion data relating to a user. The system and method are configured to accept motion data from a sensor, calculate motion attributes from the motion data, and classify the motion data using at least one mathematical model. The attribute can be calculated without classifying the movement data into activity types (specific or general activities such as walking, running, swimming, etc.). The attribute can be compared to an activity model that includes motion data obtained from multiple people not including the user. The motion data included in the model and the attribute of the user may be independent of the activity type. The attributes can be compared to select an energy consumption model from the at least one energy consumption model as best matching the at least one motion attribute.
