A representative compound comprises 4-ethoxybenzaldehyde and one or more additional activating agents, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or excipient. The carrier or excipient may be blended for topical administration. The composition may also be formulated for transdermal administration. The composition can be used for preventing or treating pigmentation disorders, for example, but not limiting thereto, post-inflammatory pigmentation.
