A method is provided for surgically implanting a first electrode and a second electrode on or proximate to at least one of the sphenopalatine ganglia, the sphenopalatine nerves, or the vidian nerves located on different sides of a patients face. One step of the method includes inserting the first electrode into a coronoid notch located on one side of the patients face. A second electrode is inserted into a coronoid notch located on the other side of the patients face. The first and second electrodes are then advanced on or proximate to first and second locations on different sides of the patients face, respectively. Each of the first and second locations includes at least one of the sphenopalatine ganglia, the sphenopalatine nerves, or the vidian nerves.
