A method for stimulating facial nerves in a subject with synkineticreinnervated muscles includes providing an electrode, having a plurality ofcontacts, in aparotic region of the subject's face, stimulating each of the contactsseparately,identifying one or more contacts from the plurality of contacts that cause oneor more nervebranches to activate a desired facial muscle, and selecting the identifiedcontacts tostimulate the one or more nerve branches. The system includes an electrodehaving aplurality of contacts for placement in a parotic region of the subject's faceand a processor incommunication with the electrode. The processor has program code forstimulating eachof the contacts separately, for identifying one or more contacts from theplurality ofcontacts that cause one or more nerve branches to activate a desired facialmuscle, and forselecting the identified contacts to stimulate the one or more nerve branches.
