The technology disclosed herein relates to automatic pan / tilt / zoom adjustment to improve vital sign acquisition. In various embodiments, a vital sign acquisition camera (176) operable to pan, tilt and zoom (“PTZ”) can capture an image of a patient (100) (402). The image can be analyzed (404) to detect the drawn position of the patient in the image coordinate space of the image. The desired position of the patient in the image coordinate space of the image can be determined (406), and the difference in the image coordinate space between the drawn position and the desired position can be calculated (408). The difference can then be mapped from the image coordinate space to the PTZ space (410). One or more PTZ parameters of the vital sign acquisition camera may be changed based on the mapping (412).
