Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Bestimmung des Anteils an molekularem Sauerstoff in einem Atemgas, beispielsweise in der Lungenfunktionsdiagnostik, umfassend das Einleiten des Atemgases in ein Messrohr, das Senden eines Schallsignals durch einen Schallsender und Empfangen des Schallsignals durch einen Schallempfänger, das Definieren einer Schallmessstrecke durch den Schallsender und den Schallempfänger, das Bestimmen der mittleren molaren Masse des Atemgases mittels der über die Schallmessstrecke gemessenen Schalllaufzeit, und das Bestimmen des Kohlenstoffdioxidanteils des Atemgases mit einem Kohlenstoffdioxidgassensor.
