591912 An apparatus and method for steam treating a bale (10) of fodder such as hay or silage is disclosed. The apparatus includes a steam manifold (1) that is adapted to receive steam from a source (20) and to distribute the steam to a plurality of lances (2a, 2d, 2c). The lances are adapted so that in use they penetrate the bale (10) of fodder by placing or dropping the bale thereon. The weight of the bale (10) assists penetration of the lances into the bale so steam can be supplied to the interior volume of the fodder to sterilise and kill mould spores.
