The present invention relates to a generator for outputting a high frequency alternating current to a medical device. The generator includes a power supply unit, a high frequency generator primary side unit (HF generator primary side unit), an application unit and a control unit. Here, the HF generator primary side unit is connected to the power feeding unit and the application unit, and is configured to supply a high frequency alternating current to the application unit during operation. The application unit is switchably electrically connected via at least one relay to a terminal for connecting a medical device. The control unit is galvanically separated from the application unit and is configured to control the at least one relay and optionally the application unit.
