The present invention relates to a water-borne cheese coating composition comprising one or more film forming agents selected from the group consisting of an emulsion polymer and a biopolymer dispersion and that further comprises viable lactic acid bacteria. The lactic acid bacteria provide a biopreservative effect against unwanted microorganisms in the coating composition and/or on the surface of a cheese treated therewith.
