The present invention provides compositions and methods for sensitizing bacteria to antimicrobial agents. The method includes exposing the bacterium to an agent that inhibits antimicrobial resistance in the presence of an invasion promoting agent. Also provided is a method of killing antimicrobial-resistant bacteria comprising exposing the bacteria to an agent that inhibits antimicrobial resistance in the presence of an invasion promoting agent and exposing the bacteria to the antimicrobial. The method can also include identifying bacteria and bacterial antimicrobial resistance profiles and adjusting the method accordingly. Exemplary penetration enhancers that are provided are polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) and polyhexamethylene guanide (PHMG). Exemplary agents that inhibit antimicrobial resistance are those that bind to and inhibit antimicrobial resistance determinants such as beta-lactamase, PBP2a, NDM-1, Vim2.
