PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus non-invasively and easily measuring the thickness of the cartilage of a knee joint.
SOLUTION: Volume data on the inside of a knee including the distal end of a femur 100 are obtained by scanning the knee of a person largely bent as the person is seated on a chair, etc., with an ultrasonic beam from a mechanical three-dimensional probe 10. An image pre-processing part 22 and a cartilage extraction part 24 extract the tissue boundary by extracting the edge on the obtained volume data, and extract a part corresponding to the contour of the cartilage from the extracted tissue boundary based on the specification by a user, etc. A thickness computing part 38 finds a normal of the contour of the cartilage at a point specified on the extracted contour of the cartilage, and computes the distance between two intersection points of the normal and the contour of the cartilage as the thickness of the cartilage at the specified point.
