The end effector (22) includes an ultrasonic blade (36) acoustically coupled with the waveguide (50). A nodal support element (72) is arranged within a distal portion of the shaft (20) and encircles the waveguide (50) at a distal-most acoustic node of the waveguide (50). The nodal support element (72) includes a support portion (330) aligned with the distal-most acoustic node, and a sealing portion (332) extending axially from the support portion (330). The support portion (330) engages an inner surface of the shaft (20) and is configured to support the waveguide (50) in coaxial alignment with the shaft axis.
