The present invention provides Curcuma longa callus enriched in secondary metabolites obtained from a lateral bud of C. longa by a process comprising growing C. longa lateral bud, inducing callus cell culture from C. longa lateral bud in a Murashige-Skoog medium comprising at least one phyto-hormone and sub-culturing said callus cell culture to obtain C. longa callus enriched in secondary metabolites. The secondary metabolites comprise coumarins, polyphenols, curcuminoids and flavonoids. The C. longa callus of the present invention exhibits in-vitro anti-oxidant activity of 30 to 50 (im/ml in terms of IC50 value and anti-compulsive effect.
