A plant builder system or method to enable iterative plant design includes a process & instrumentation diagram (P&ID) 305 and an equipment object generator 310 that when executed generates equipment objects (500, fig 5, which may be modules, routines and/or data structures) corresponding to equipment symbols in the P&ID. Each equipment symbol corresponds to a component of physical equipment in the plant (e.g. valves, pumps, sensors). Each equipment object includes a simulation element (520, fig 5) that provides simulation of the equipment object. The equipment object also includes an equipment symbol name or ID (512, fig 5), a graphic element associated with the symbol (514, fig 5), material inputs and outputs (I/O, e.g. flow in a pipe) based on connections with other objects and an I/O communication element that defines an address of a controller of a physical component in the plant.
