The present invention is directed to an immediate release film coating system having improved moisture barrier properties for use in oral dosage forms such as compression tablets and other orally administrable substrates. The film coating system can be applied directly to the substrate or after the subcoat is coated on the substrate. Preferably, the moisture barrier film coating is made of a dry powder mixture comprising polyvinyl alcohol, a pH-dependent soluble polymer, a plasticizer, a lubricant, and optionally a non-tackifier, an alkalizing agent and a pigment.
