A growing room for providing a controlled growing environment comprises a thermally insulated, light-transmissive inner enclosure 8 for containing the controlled growing environment 4. The inner enclosure encloses a controlled atmosphere for the controlled growing environment. A light-transmissive outer enclosure 6 surrounds the inner enclosure and is arranged to protect the inner enclosure from the external environment. A ventilated cavity 10 is defined between the outer and inner enclosures. The outer enclosure has at least one lower ventilation opening 11 and at least one upper ventilation opening. A radiation control layer located in the ventilated cavity between the outer and inner enclosures provides controlled absorption of incident solar radiation, controlling the level of solar radiation within the growing environment. Also disclosed is a network of growing rooms, in which one of the rooms comprises a mushroom growing house, including a plenum for the transmission of carbon dioxide between the growing rooms.
