Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von hydrophilen Polyurethanschäumen, bei dem in einem Schritt A) isocyanatfunktionelle Prepolymere hergestellt, in einem Schritt B) die freien NCO-Gruppen der Prepolymere ganz oder teilweise mit isocyanatreaktiven Hydrophilierungsmitteln unter Kettenverlängerung umgesetzt, in einem Schritt C) die Prepolymere vor, während oder nach dem Schritt B) in Wasser dispergiert werden, wobei gegebenenfalls enthaltene potentiell ionische Gruppen durch teilweise oder vollständige Umsetzung mit einem Neutralisationsmittel in die ionische Form überführt werden, in einem Schritt D) die Dispersion des Schritts C) mit Schäumungsadditiven vermischt, in einem Schritt E) das Gemisch des Schritts D) aufgeschäumt und in einem Schritt F) der Schaum des Schritts E) getrocknet wird, wobei das Gemisch des Schritts D) vor dem Aufschäumen im Schritt E) für eine Dauer von wenigstens 4 Stunden gelagert wird.
