The invention relates to novel compounds, processes for their preparation and their use in protecting biological materials from radiation damage (radioprotection). Preferred compounds of the invention are those of Formula II, as follows: wherein W represents &mdashN(R1R2) where R1 and R2 are not both hydrogen and where they may together form a 5, 6 or 7 membered ring structure, &mdashNHN(R1R2), &mdashNHR3N(R1R2), &mdashNHR3OR2, &mdashN(R3)R3OR2, &mdashN(R1)R3OR3OR3, &mdashOR3NR1R2, &mdashOR3 or W represents piperidyl, piperazinyl, morpholinyl, thiomorpholinyl or diazepanyl each of which may be optionally substituted by C1 to C4 alkyl, C2 to C4 alkenyl, &mdashN(CO)N(R1R2), &mdashN(CO)OR1, &mdashN(CO)OR3OH, &mdash(CO)NR1R2, &mdashR3(CO)NR1R2, &mdashR3OR1, &mdashOR1, &mdashN(R1R2) or &mdashNH&mdash R1 and R2 are the same or different and are selected from hydrogen, C1 to C4 alkyl or C2 to C4 alkenyl R3 is a C1 to C4 alkyl or C2 to C4 alkenyl group or chain Z is the same or different and represents N or CH Z&prime is the same or different and represents N or C X represents CH, N or NH, where is a double bond when X is CH or N and a single bond when X is NH X&prime represents N or NH, wherein when X is CH or NX&prime is NH and wherein X and X&prime are different and further where is a double bond when X&prime is N and a single bond when X&prime is NH Q represents H, alkoxyl, &mdashNR1R2, F or Cl Q1 is absent when Z&prime is N and when Z&prime is C it represents H, alkoxyl, &mdashNR1R2, F or Cl A represents a five to ten membered single or multiple ring structure with heterocyclic N or O located at the ortho position, said ring including optional double bonds, substitutions and/or other heteroatoms and pharmaceutically acceptable derivatives thereof.본 발명은 생체 시료들을 방사선 손상으로부터 보호(방사선 방호)하기 위한 신규의 화합물, 이 화합물의 제조 방법 및 이와 같은 경우에 있어서 화합물의 용도에 관한 것이다. 본 발명의 바람직한 화합물은 하기 화학식 II의 방사선 보호 화합물 및 이의 약학적으로 허용 가능한 유도체이다:화학식 II상기 식 중,W는 -N(R1R2)를 나타내며, 여기서, 상기 R1 및 R2는 둘 다 수소가 아니며, 상기 R1
