PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hair treating agent which is, even in the presence of an ionic material, (1) easily preparable into a viscous formulation, (2) excellent in stability, (3) applicable uniformly onto hair without drooling during operation, therefor excellent in operability, and (4) capable of imparting excellent functional characteristics without imparting sticky feeling or starchy feeling to hair after operation.SOLUTION: This hair treating agent is constituted by including, as a thickening agent, a copolymer obtained by copolymerizing an ammonium salt of 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid, N,N-dimethylacrylamide, lauryl methacrylate and lauroxy polyethyleneglycol monomethacrylate in which the added mole number of ethylene oxide is 4.
