To provide a reciprocating work machine capable of reducing power consumption.SOLUTION: A control section of a reciprocating work machine has an energy saving mode. In the energy saving mode, a voltage of a first effective value is applied to a motor in a first period during one reciprocating operation of an upper blade 7 and a lower blade 8, and a voltage of a second effective value lower than the first effective value is applied to the motor in a second period during the one reciprocating operation of the upper blade 7 and the lower blade 8. The first period includes a work period in which an opposite material is held and cut by a blade section 7b of the upper blade 7 and a blade section 8b of the lower blade 8. The second period is at least a part of a non-work period in which the blade section 7b of the upper blade 7 and the blade section 8b of the lower blade 8 overlap with each other and an opposite material held by the blade sections 7b and 8b does not exist.
