PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce zinc oxide which is uniform in shape and size and has a hexagonal prism-like shape, particularly, the shape similar to that of a hand drum.SOLUTION: A method for producing zinc oxide comprises the steps of: mixing a zinc compound with an amine compound in an aqueous solution adjusting the pH of the resulting aqueous solution to &ge7 to produce a precipitate and heating the precipitate-produced aqueous solution to &ge40°C. A carboxylic acid and/or its salt of the amount equivalent to 0.001-0.01 molar ratio of the carboxylic acid and/or its salt to the zinc atom of the zinc compound are mixed in the zinc compound.
