The method includes contacting a skin surface of a patient and palpating a tissue using a palpation element, the palpation element carried by a handheld or hand operated device and movable with respect to the handheld or hand operated device. The method includes actively stabilizing the handheld or hand operated device during the palpating the tissue. The method includes characterizing a reaction of the tissue to the palpating. The method includes transmitting the characterization of the tissue reaction to a remote communication module.
