The invention provides a device (and method) for masking noise in which a calibration is carried out to determine the sensitivity of a user to a calibration sound. During use of the device, the signal characteristics of the masking sound are adjusted based on the detected noise, the response of the user to the detected noise and also the response of the user to the calibration sound. As a result, a masking sound is generated that is optimally adapted to mask unwanted noise, in particular in a way which avoids the masking noise itself becoming a disturbance to the particular user.L'invention concerne un dispositif (et un procédé) permettant de masquer un bruit dans lequel un étalonnage est effectué pour déterminer la sensibilité d'un utilisateur à un son d'étalonnage. Pendant l'utilisation du dispositif, les caractéristiques de signal du son de masquage sont ajustées sur la base du bruit détecté, de la réponse de l'utilisateur au bruit détecté et également de la réponse de l'utilisateur au son d'étalonnage. Il s'ensuit qu'un son de masquage est généré, lequel est adapté de manière optimale pour masquer un bruit indésirable, en particulier d'une manière qui évite que le bruit de masquage lui-même ne devienne une perturbation pour l'utilisateur particulier.
