A method for screening a population of plants to identify individuals that show a reduced susceptibility to ethylene and physiological disorders, in particular Russet Spotting and Yellowing. The method involves germinating a population of seeds in darkness and in the presence of ethylene to obtain seedlings that have a longer hypocotyl as compared to the original ethylene-sensitive control. Also disclosed are plants having reduced susceptibility to ethylene and have the NCIMB accession numbers 41449, 41450, 41448, 41451, 41452 and 41453. The plant can be a leafy vegetable, in particular lettuce.
