The swallowable device (10) comprises: a swallowable capsule (20) sized to pass through the intestinal tract, the capsule (20) having a capsule wall (21w), and a least a portion of the capsule wall (21w) configured to degrade upon exposure to a selected pH in an intestine while protecting the capsule wall (21w) from degradation in a stomach of the patient. The swallowable device (10) also comprises at least one expandable member assembly (30) disposed within the capsule (20). The swallowable device (10) comprises a liquid (68) contained in one compartment, and a reactant (65) contained in another compartment, wherein when a valve (50) degrades, the liquid (68) and the reactant (65) mix to produce a gas which expands at least the second compartment (35). The swallowable device (10) also comprises a delivery mechanism (70) coupled to the at least one expandable member (30), and at least one tissue penetrating member (40).
