The container 1 has an enclosure formed of mesh 2 which is capable of supporting a growing medium 3. The growing medium is either formed from a material which does not drain through the mesh or is restrained in a pierceable bag so as to retain the growing medium within the enclosure. The container is provided with a fixing arrangement, whereby the enclosure may be secured to an inclined or substantially vertical surface of a structure such as a building. The mesh has a size sufficiently large to permit plants to be planted therethrough into the growing medium. A drip feed irrigation system 7 may also be provided.
